Elbrus Expedition Update From Barrels Camp

Text & Photos: Ben Mitchell
Elbrus“Day 5: Good hike today. We went up Cheget. Rode two chairlifts and hiked to 3400 meters to acclimatize. Then we had lunch at the mid station and the clouds cleared. We got our first views of Elbrus. Beautiful hike and awesome valleys. Everyone did great.

elbrus Day 6: Went on a great acclimatization hike to 4340 m. We are moved into the Barrels Camp here at 3840 meters. The weather is socking in here and moderate to strong winds and snow. Planning a rest and training day tomorrow and possibly moving summit day up to Sunday due to bad weather Monday and Tuesday. We will continue to monitor weather and how people feel!

Day 7: Weather is looking a little windy tomorrow. Still keeping the option for now, but looks like Tuesday may be our day. We are resting here this morning and going to go do a little training this afternoon. May send someone down the lift for more water beer and snacks tomorrow! Tuesday seems to be looking better and better in the forecast.

Day 8: Spent the day lounging around camp. Walked up several hundred meters in the afternoon and did some skills training. Everyone is feeling good!”barrels camp
