2011 Aconcagua Expedition Begins

Alpenglow’s 2011 Aconcagua Expedition is underway! The team of five, which will be guided by Alpenglow’s owner, Adrian Ballinger, and lead guide Jaime Avila arrived in Mendoza on Monday. They spent a couple of days exploring the town, enjoying amazing wine and steak dinners, and finalizing logistics. Yesterday they traveled to the town of Penitentes, which at 8,000 feet, sits at the entrance to the valleys leading into Aconcagua through Argentina’s Andes. Today the team began the trek to basecamp through the landscape of the green Valle de Vacas and were to make their way to Las Leñas. More news to come! …

Wrapping up Winter Programs in South America

After two extremely successful programs in January (Ecuador and Argentina), our clients and guides have gone their separate ways. Callum returned to real life in California, Nik is enjoying a little more time in Mendoza, Jacques has headed to Tierra del Fuego, and Jaime is en route home to Ecuador! Their last day in Argentina together, Jaime, Jacques and Nik had a relaxing day on horseback. Nothing like a little leisure after a lot of hard work!…

Aconcagua Summit Photos

The Alpenglow Team is back in Mendoza, and has been celebrating with all the good treats Argentina has to offer – especially great Malbec and big steaks. They’ll spend the next day or two realxing and recovering from their summit before they say goodbye and begin their trips home.

Guide Jaime Avila just sent a few photos from the expedition, including summit shots from a perfect day. Enjoy, and stay tuned for a full photo album from the trip on Facebook, and blogs coming soon from Alpenglow Expeditions ski mountaineering in Europe!

Steak Tomorrow!

The team is back in basecamp (Plaza de Mulas) enjoying Cokes and homemade pizza from our local cook. Last night was cold and windy at high camp so the group was especially excited to get down. They timed their summit perfectly on the last calm day before big winds came to Aconcagua. The walk all the way to basecamp was a long one with heavy packs, so the team is enjoying the good food and comfortable camp. Tomorrow, they plan to get moving early and hike all the way out. They will be eating steak in Mendoza by tomorrow night! …

Aconcagua Team in High Camp Ready for Summit Push!

We just chatted with the Alpenglow Aconcagua team and they are getting ready to summit! The strong team has taken full advantage of perfect weather and is in their top camp at just below 6,000 meters. They moved today from Camp II to Camp III, taking less than 3 hours for the climb from 5,300 meters.

Reports are that it’s windy outside, but clear and looking good for a possible summit tomorrow morning. If the weather holds and winds drop as we expect them to, the group will have an ideal day. From there they will be heading down as…

Aconcagua Base Camp

The Alpenglow office just received a quick call from Aconcagua Base Camp. Jaime and the group just arrived into Plaza Argentina, where they will be basing for the next couple of days before moving to the upper camps on the mountain. The group had perfect weather on the three day trek in, and it looks like the pattern is meant to remain stable. With the group strong and acclimatized from their climbs in Ecuador, they will be moving quickly and trying to take advantage of the great conditions. Stay tuned!
