Japan Backcountry Ski Expedition – 2025

Alpenglow Expeditions’ Backcountry Ski Japan trip is officially underway! Over the next week, our team will be chasing the legendary powder of Hokkaido, blending lift-accessed touring with deep, untouched backcountry runs. Whether you’re considering a future trip or just want to follow along, we’ll be sharing daily updates straight from the mountains.

Day 1: Fun First Turns in Hokkaido

📍 February 3 – Sapporo Kokusai

Our skiers kicked things off today with a stellar first day on the snow. Guide Isaac Laredo reports:

“Fun first day, great snow quality. We are cruising to Sapporo Kokusai for some lift-accessed backcountry and resort riding.”Sapporo Kokusai is known for its deep, light powder and easy-access sidecountry, making it the perfect place to warm up the legs and dial in the conditions. With Japan’s famous low-density snow piling up, the team is already getting a taste of why this region is a dream destination for skiers.

What’s Next?

Tomorrow, the group will continue hunting for fresh turns, exploring more of Hokkaido’s renowned terrain. Stay tuned for more updates as we track their journey through ski Japan’s best backcountry zones—from the volcanic slopes of Niseko to the deep forests of Furano.
