Summit Success on Aconcagua

On December 26th, 2023, the Alpenglow Expeditions Aconcagua Rapid Ascent Expedition Team reached the summit of Aconcagua, the highest peak in the Americas, in a remarkable 11 days. Led by Alpenglow Guides Carla Perez and Roberto “Tico” Morales, the team overcame challenging conditions and pushed the limits of what’s possible in high-altitude mountaineering.

Alpenglow Expeditions is no stranger to pushing boundaries, and the Aconcagua Rapid Ascent Expedition was no exception. The team employed Alpenglow’s innovative Rapid Ascent approach, a strategy designed to maximize success while minimizing the time spent at high altitudes. One key element of this approach was pre-acclimatization, with team members sleeping in Hypoxico tents for four weeks leading up to the expedition. This method allowed them to adapt to the thin air of high altitudes from the comfort of their own homes, providing a crucial advantage once on the mountain.

Skipping the traditional and strenuous trek to base camp, the team took a helicopter ride directly to the Plaza de Argentina base camp, thanks to Alpenglow’s strategic logistics. This not only saved valuable time but also conserved energy for the challenging ascent ahead. Alpenglow’s commitment to top-notch logistics included providing quality, healthy food, efficient portering, high-end base camp facilities, and comfortable lodging, ensuring the team could focus solely on the climb.

Guided by Carla Perez and Roberto “Tico” Morales, both seasoned mountaineers with extensive experience in Aconcagua, the team tackled the 360 route. This less crowded and superior route not only provided a more serene climbing experience but also increased the chances of success. The climb was no walk in the park, however, as the team faced high winds and bone-chilling temperatures on their way to the summit.

The hard-fought journey reached its pinnacle just after sunrise on December 26th, as the Alpenglow Expedition Team stood triumphantly on the summit of Aconcagua. The sense of accomplishment was palpable, and each team member carried away not only the achievement of reaching the summit but also a once-in-a-lifetime experience etched into their memories.

Alpenglow Expeditions continues to redefine what is possible in high-altitude mountaineering, and the Aconcagua Rapid Ascent Expedition stands as a testament to their commitment to innovation, safety, and success. Aspiring climbers and adventure enthusiasts alike can look to the Alpenglow team for inspiration as they continue to push the boundaries of what can be achieved in the world’s most challenging environments.
