What You’ll Learn and Experience

Backcountry Travel Skills

Our guides teach fundamental backpacking techniques along the way—how to pack efficiently, treat water, travel safely, and manage a campsite. Whether you’re a beginner or brushing up for future solo trips, you’ll walk away more confident in your outdoor skills.

Natural History and Park Insight

Each day on trail is a deep dive into Yosemite’s geology, ecosystems, and history. Learn how glaciers carved the valleys, how the Tuolumne River shaped its canyon, and why this landscape continues to draw people from around the world.

Scenic Immersion

Backpacking lets you see the side of Yosemite that day hikers never reach. From high ridgelines to deep river valleys, you’ll camp in spots most visitors will never know exist—and wake up to granite walls and quiet forest all around you.

Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne

This 5-day point-to-point begins in Yosemite’s high country and follows the Tuolumne River through one of the park’s most impressive backcountry corridors. From the trailhead, we descend steadily toward Pate Valley, trading open alpine terrain for the warmth and depth of the river canyon below. Granite walls rise overhead, waterfalls pour through narrow side canyons, and the sound of moving water becomes a constant companion as we commit to the route.

Each day carries us deeper along the river. We move through the sculpted narrows of Mirror Gorge, continue into the heart of the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne, and finish in the cooler alpine environment near Glen Aulin. The terrain is dynamic and engaging, with riverside travel, rocky canyon sections, and forested benches that offer well-positioned camps near reliable water. Expect long views, powerful cascades, shaded stretches along the river, and occasional swim opportunities when conditions allow.

This is a true Yosemite backpacking experience. The route demands sustained daily mileage, significant elevation change, and comfort moving through remote terrain with a full pack. It is quiet, physical, and intentionally removed from the frontcountry rhythm of the park. Our pacing keeps the days manageable while still allowing us to cover meaningful ground through one of Yosemite’s most memorable landscapes.

If you are looking to experience Yosemite beyond the viewpoints and into the moving heart of the Sierra, the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne delivers a focused, immersive backcountry experience.
