The History and Adventure of Donner Pass

Long before pioneers, railroads, or climbers arrived, the Donner Pass area was home to the Washoe people, whose ancestral lands include the Sierra Nevada and Lake Tahoe Basin. The Washoe traveled seasonally through the high passes, fishing, hunting, and gathering plants. Donner Summit was part of their cultural landscape, providing routes across the mountains and sacred spaces for ceremony. Today, when we climb or hike here, we move across ground that has carried the traditions and knowledge of the Washoe for generations.
A Landmark of the Sierra Nevada
In 1846, the Donner Party attempted to cross the pass late in the season and became trapped by early snow, lending the area its now-famous name. Their struggle remains one of the most enduring pioneer stories of hardship and survival in the American West. A few decades later, the pass became central to the Gold Rush migration and, soon after, the building of the Transcontinental Railroad, linking California to the rest of the country.
From Railroads to Rock Walls
By the late 1800s, tunnels and tracks cut through the granite of Donner Pass, bringing trains through terrain once thought impassable. While trains still cross today, the surrounding granite cliffs have taken on a new identity—one of California’s best-known climbing venues. Donner Summit now blends deep history with modern adventure, where climbers trace lines up the same walls that have stood as barriers and pathways for centuries.
