At Alpamayo Basecamp

Two mountaineers navigating a glacier on a Gasherbrum II Expedition

From the satellite phone:

“After our acclimatizing day on mountain bikes and the 2 days of trekking in, we are here at Alpamayo basecamp. The weather up here is wonderful and the climbing route is said to be in great shape. We’ll find out soon! Tomorrow we start our carry. No Everest Sherpa here, so for the next 2 days our 6 climbers and 3 guides will be carrying all our own equipment up the mountain to our forward camp. That will give us some more excellent acclimatization, and then we’ll be moving up the mountain for real. All 9 of us are in good health, happy and excited at the prospect of the technical ice climb ahead, on what has been voted The Most Beautiful Mountain in the World. More news soon!”
