Guide Spotlight: Tim Dobbins

AMGA/IFMGA mountain guide Tim Dobbins Ski Touring

Upon meeting Tim Dobbins, it is pretty apparent that he has some top-tier mountain sense. But, dig a little deeper, and you’ll find that not only is he a fully certified IFMGA mountain guide, he’s also the stuff of legends. His first descents in Chamonix have stood the test of time, such as Le Col de la Tour des Courtes, Mont Blanc Massif, France and Couloir Nord du Grossjoch, Grosshorn, Oberland, Switzerland. Check out the video here!!

Currently, he resides in Truckee with his wife and two children, and we feel incredibly fortunate that he has been at Alpenglow for nearly a decade now.

Background & Expertise
Tim honed his alpine and big-mountain skills over seven years living and climbing in France and Italy. During that time he not only led classic mountaineering objectives but also completed first ski descents in some of the steepest terrain in the Mont Blanc Massif and Swiss Alps.

He’s fluent in both English and French and is a member of the French guiding association, with plans to join the Italian guides’ association as well — a step that will further expand his international guiding footprint.

Guiding Focus
Tim’s offerings are built around customized, client-centered guiding. Whether the goal is ski touring, steep lines, off-piste exploration, or waterfall ice climbs, his skill set covers a wide range of alpine disciplines. He also teaches avalanche safety and decision-making to help clients move confidently and competently in complex mountain environments.

Being the owner of the local ski touring specialty shop, I have a friends at many Avy Skills Education company in the Sierra. When my 21-23 year old kids were finally ready to pay attention to the Avy 1 3-day course, I knew who I wanted them to learn from. So instead of asking for deals or pursuing Sierra College, I was very happy to kick down and hire Alpenglow Expeditions! And asked for Tim Dobbins IFMGA. My kids said the experience was amazing and they love backcountry skiing now more than ever.

Any aspirant guide can teach the curriculum I presume, but Alpenglow employees have the most experience I’ve seen in any company like this regarding BOTH AMGA certs and personal experience.

Love the team at Alpenglow Expeditions! I did the Backcountry 1.0 course and AIARE 1 course through them in March.

The AIARE 1 course is a true must-do for anyone in the Tahoe backcountry. The online portion was engaging, Tim Dobbins and Isaac Laredo improved my observation skills and decision making the Palisades backcountry. Thank you for a rocking educational experience!!

I recently took an Avalanche Rescue Course through Alpenglow, and was highly impressed with the professionalism and courtesy of their staff, along with the knowledge and skills of the guides. Our lead guide, Tim Dobbins, and the assistant guide, Emily Sotomayor, were both able to blend the formal instruction required of the course with their own personal experiences.
