Chile’s volcanoes offer some of the most unique ski mountaineering in the world—steep lines, endless terrain, and the added bonus of descending from the summit of an active volcano. Alpenglow Expeditions’ Volcanoes of Chile Ski Expedition is a rare chance to experience high-altitude ski touring in the heart of the Andes, where long descents and remote peaks make for an unforgettable adventure.

What to Expect

This 12-day adventure is designed for experienced backcountry skiers and splitboarders looking to combine big mountain skiing with international travel. The itinerary includes summits of multiple volcanoes, including Villarrica, Lonquimay, Llaima, and Lanín, conditions dependent—each offering sustained vertical, incredible terrain, and, in some cases, the surreal sight of an open crater at the top.

Our team will navigate variable conditions, from perfect corn snow to icy, technical descents. We use 4×4 support to access the mountains efficiently, maximizing ski time and keeping the focus on the descents.

Ski Touring with Expert Guides

Like all Alpenglow Expeditions trips, this adventure is led by AMGA/IFMGA-certified guides who are highly experienced in ski mountaineering in South America. Their knowledge of the terrain, weather, and logistics ensures a smooth expedition while maintaining a strong safety margin in a dynamic mountain environment.

In addition to ski objectives, this expedition also includes cultural experiences, from soaking in natural hot springs to enjoying local Chilean cuisine.

This expedition is ideal for strong backcountry skiers and splitboarders comfortable on steep, variable terrain with crampons, ice axes, and ski mountaineering techniques.
