Skiing Patagonia: Steep Lines, Wild Terrain, and a Unique, Remote Basecamp

Our Patagonia Backcountry Ski Expedition isn’t just about skiing big lines—it’s about getting far off the grid and into one of the most remote and dramatic mountain zones in South America. For eight days, we operate out of the small village of Cerro Castillo, Chile, surrounded by glaciated peaks, steep couloirs, and untouched terrain.

Basecamp: Cerro Castillo

We fly into Balmaceda, then drive deep into Chilean Patagonia toward Cerro Castillo. The town is tiny, but the terrain around it is massive. From the doorstep of our comfortable lodge, we access everything from big alpine bowls to technical descents off the Cerro Castillo massif. Each day, our guides evaluate snow and weather to plan the best objectives. It’s a flexible approach built for real ski mountaineers.

Touring in the Heart of Patagonia

This zone is remote. No chairlifts. No crowds. Just long approaches, big climbs, and even bigger descents. Over five full ski days, we tour through a variety of terrain—glaciers, couloirs, steep faces. Every day is dictated by conditions and group goals, but you can expect vertical gains in the 4,000–5,000 foot range, with runs that demand both endurance and precision.

You’ll need solid backcountry skills. This trip is for experienced skiers and riders who are confident on 45° slopes in variable conditions. Ski crampons are essential, and experience with basic snow climbing tools—ice axe and boot crampons—is a big plus.

End with a Climb—and a Meal

We close the trip with a final ski tour before returning to Coyhaique for a team dinner and debrief. Patagonia has a way of getting under your skin—the scale, the quiet, the exposure—and it always leaves us wanting more. The next morning, we transfer to Balmaceda and head home.
