Returning to Carstensz Pyramid: A Rare Opportunity for Rock Climbers

After years away, we’re finally heading back to one of the most elusive and technical climbs of the Seven Summits—Carstensz Pyramid! It’s a true rock climb, deep in the remote jungles of Papua, Indonesia. With steep limestone faces, a Tyrolean traverse near the summit, and big exposure, this peak is a serious test for climbers looking to push their limits. And with Alpenglow’s heli-assisted approach, we’re maximizing time on the wall and minimizing the jungle slog.
What Makes Carstensz Pyramid Unique?
Carstensz Pyramid (4,884m / 16,024 ft) is the highest peak in Oceania and the most technical of the Seven Summits. Unlike other high-altitude peaks that require glacier travel or snow climbing, Carstensz is all about steep rock. The route is 500m (1,640 ft) of sustained climbing on sharp limestone, requiring solid footwork, rock climbing experience up to 5.8 (5a) skills, and confidence in exposed terrain.
Unlike many traditional Seven Summits expeditions, there’s no base camp filled with trekkers or porters carrying loads up glaciated slopes. Instead, the approach is an adventure in itself—deep jungle, shifting weather, and a truly wild setting. Alpenglow Expeditions’ heli-assisted approach means we get straight to the climb, avoiding the notoriously long and unpredictable trek through the rainforest.
