Patagonia Bound: Skiing with Adrian Ballinger and Emily Harrington

This September, we’re embarking on an extraordinary backcountry ski expedition in the heart of Chilean Patagonia, guided by none other than Adrian Ballinger and Emily Harrington. This isn’t just another ski trip—it’s a unique opportunity to explore the rugged beauty of Cerro Castillo alongside two of the most accomplished mountain athletes of our time.

Why It’s a Big Deal

Adrian Ballinger is a renowned high-altitude mountaineer and skier, having summited Everest and K2 without supplemental oxygen. As the founder of Alpenglow Expeditions, he’s led over 150 international climbing expeditions and is known for pioneering rapid ascent strategies.

Emily Harrington is a five-time U.S. National Champion in sport climbing and has successfully free-climbed Yosemite’s El Capitan in a single day. Her achievements span from competition climbing to high-altitude expeditions, making her one of the most versatile climbers in the world.

Together, Adrian and Emily bring a wealth of experience, passion, and a deep commitment to environmental advocacy, making this expedition not only adventurous but also meaningful.

The Skiing: Cerro Castillo, Patagonia

The trip runs September 6–13, 2025. We’ll be based out of a cozy lodge near the jagged spires of Cerro Castillo, skiing from the door each day with objectives tailored to snow conditions and the group’s ability.

Expect long, rewarding days with 4,000–5,000 feet of climbing and wide-open descents on smooth corn snow. Think High Sierra lines with fewer people and even bigger scenery. There are opportunities for mellow tours and steep couloirs—and our certified guides will help match each group to the best terrain for their goals.

Who It’s For

This expedition is built for strong backcountry skiers with excellent fitness and the ability to ski steeper, more technical terrain (up to 45°). You don’t need to be a pro, but you do need to be confident with skinning, transitions, and skiing variable snow. Prior experience with ski crampons and basic snow climbing is recommended.
